Year 4
Welcome to Year 4!
Below, you will find some useful information about what is going on in the Year 4 classroom this year.
Reading
At Moulton, we aim to develop a life-long love of reading. Reading is central to everything we do in school and we love sharing engaging and exciting texts with the children.
If your child is reading on our Read, Write Inc. scheme, your child will be given a Read Write Inc. reading book to take home. These are changed on a three read cycle. Once children have finished on the Read, Write Inc. scheme, your child will choose their own reading book from our classroom or school library. Books from home can also be brought into school to read. Choosing a book can be tricky sometimes and we offer support and guidance to ensure the books chosen are at an appropriate level of challenge. We will work closely with children to provide this support.
Guided Reading is taught daily and is taught through the 'Pathways to Read' scheme. This uses a quality text each half-term, which we will explore in lessons.
To achieve the most out of reading your child possibly can, it is important that they read for at least 20 minutes daily.
English
English is taught through the 'Pathways to Write' scheme. This uses a quality text each half-term, which we will explore in lessons. Through these texts, we will develop our understanding of punctuation, spelling and grammar and then apply this to our own writing.
Spelling is taught through the 'Grammarsaurus' scheme and will be taught daily. Year 4 will use rules, patterns and etymology to help guide them to make the correct choices.

Maths
Maths is taught using the scheme, White Rose Maths. Each lesson, your child will gain experience answering a wide variety of questions to develop their fluency, as well as reasoning and problem solving questions to really encourage a deep level of understanding. Children will also take part in a short fluency session every morning to start the day, using 'Fluency Bee'.
Times Tables:
In June, children in Year 4 will sit a statutory Multiplication Check. Please refer to our class dojo page for more information about the check. It is very important that the children are practising their times tables weekly so please encourage your child to log in to Times Tables Rock Stars at home. If you have any questions about this then please send me a message on Dojo.
P.E
The children will have PE twice a week. Year 4's PE sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday each week. Thursday is taught and ran by our EDSTART coach. The children are encouraged to keep active throughout the school day by completing the Golden Mile and active brain breaks in the classroom during Active10. The children should always to be ready to take part in physical activity by wearing their active school uniform. Please also ensure that earrings are removed at home and long hair is tied back.
History and Geography
Each half term, the children will be learning about different topics. Here are the Year 4 units for this academic year:

How did the achievements of the ancient Maya impact their society and beyond?

Why are rainforests important to us?
What are rivers and how are they used?
Communication
We keep you up-to-date and communicate via Class Dojo. There will be a class story post every day with information on what we have been learning as well as any important reminders. You can also keep track of your child's behaviour and see how many dojos they have been awarded.
